sb6120 wire connections

The one differance we have connection wise is , is my GND i have mine terminated against the tuner casing instead of on the chip

Being a refurb , should not be an issue as you are just reading the flash .

Also try the above with power to pin2.

Also use a multimeter and get me the readings from pins 1,3,5,7,9
with modem on factory power supply
pin 1 = 3.25
pin 7 = 3.25
pin 9 = 3.25
pin 5 = 0 to .5
pin 3 = 0 to .5
when testing with pin 2 you still want me to leave off the power cord correct?

For the readings , i want then direct from the pins on the BCUSB , no lead connected to the header.
I get 3.3v on all pins
When testing with pin2 , No power cord connected at all

i'm not. i am hitting 4 volts on most. then some mv leak, which should be normal. i wonder if i fried it?

your wanting me to check the pins on the BCUSB itself or the modem. for some reason the more i read it the more i question what i checked

2nd pin (from the left usb end facing away from you) on the BC is hitting only 400 mv on the front row. the rest across that row are all 3.9 to 4v
and 3.9 on the center plug that should be the ground row

Ok keep the modem connected via isp and with bcusb connected start the software and reflash the spi avr firmware , and let me know the outcome.

Also when you power the modem by pin2 are you using an external 3.3v source.

the only power source i am using is the BCUSB to the isp or pin 2. should i be using another usb device to power pin 2? like a older gig stick ?

heres a log file of trying that

Ok is that with Power to modem using ISP or with power to Pin2 ?

Power to Pin2 must come from an alternative source , chop up an old usb lead and use the 5v from there to power pin2

ok with the usb power source straight to pin 2 on the flash chip, isp disconnected and modem power supply disconnected . i get this log. the other tests above have been done using the isp point, minus the times we tired it direct to the chip via pin 2

Ok i verified my pins on another BCUSB and i am getting the same reading as you , Mine is connected as per the pic , similar to you .
I am running out of ideas TBH , but i think it is still something small .

Right try this using ISP

1. Connect BCUSB to the modem , no USB lead to PC connected
2. Power on modem and wait for it to boot properly.
3. Start BCUSB software
4. Connect usb lead

Let me know the result.

what type of connector do you have on the end of your cable to solder to? that would ensure a better connection than my sticking wires in lol

when i plug in the modem with the black cat connected only to the modem and not to the usb on the computer, i get the red light on the blackcat on. the modem then boots and scans for connection (1st blue light blinking , 1st green steady , nothing else on light wise) opened BCUSB software and it says not connected. so far so good. when i plug in the BCUSB the lights on the modem stay on until i connect the external 5 volt source from the 2nd usb. then all of the lights go out. the BCUSB still can't find a flash, say unable to connect to compatible SPI device. voltage on pin 1 = 3.25/ pin 2 = 3.25/ pin 3 thru 6 are around 11mv / pin 7 = 3.69 / pin 8 = 3.24/ pin 9 = 3.25/ pin 15 = 3.75/ pin 16 = 3.75/ pins 11/12/13/14 all in the 6mv range. on a side note i ordered another black cat and modem last night lol .

We are doing ISP so you should NOT connect external VCC to pin2 as you are using power from the modem lead.
If you have ISP lead connected and you have gone through what i asked , and when you finally connect the USB to the BCUSB and your LED's remain on , then your ISP lead is not correctly connecting

the external was going to the ISP, pin 2 was left disconnected. i'll take it off of the external power and connect it back to the BCUSB on the vcc pin

with the ISP connected back to the blackcat the light go off as soon as the usb goes in. still unable to read SPI device.

Right last thing i can think off to try is to connect the wires you have soldered ,direct onto the BCUSB .

I am going to wait until the new BCUSB gets here and try to connect to that same modem. If it doesn’t work will try to connect the new BCUSB to the new modem and then try the old BCUSB. That way at least I can figure out which item has the issue. That might be this week sometime. I will post up the results. Thanks for all the time and help D3m0n. does this site have a donate link?
